60 children attended the inaugural Wicklow Primary schools Mini-Basketball Tournament

There was great excitement in the Shoreline Leisure Centre Greystones on Thursday April 12th as 60 children took part in the inaugural Wicklow Primary Schools mini-Basketball Tournament.
Event Commissioner and Basketball Ireland Development Officer Jason Killeen conducted a skills session for all and then schools played Mini-Basketball with all getting equal opportunities to learn play and enjoy the game.
Local referees Mick Larkin and Dave Mc Cann officiated.
Prior to the event teachers participated in a Workshop conducted by Vinny O’Keefe where they were introduced to the skills of Mini-Basketball and activities suitable for the PE lesson and participation in Tournaments.
The Wicklow Primary Schools Mini-Basketball programme has been developed by the Wicklow Sports Partnership in association with the Primary Schools Mini-Basketball National Committee, with the Dublin Board facilitating on an out-reach basis.

Colleagues,
31 Primary School Teams to play in the Mini3on3 Mini-Basketball Tournament
National Basketball Arena
Tuesday April 10 (9.30am to 2pm)

Primary Schools Mini 3on3 is based on the adult 3x3 game. However it differs in that teams consist of 6 players and equal emphasis is placed on playing, referring and table officiating. This educational approach is very much in keeping with the Understanding and Appreciation of Games Strand Unit in the Primary School PE Curriculum.
Mini3on3 encourages maximum participation as all children are involved in a learning and supportive environment and each basket can accommodate 12 players. The Mini3on3 brochure can be downloaded on https://www.primaryschoolsminibasketballireland.com
31 Dublin Primary school teams will play Mini3on3 in the National Basketball Arena on Tuesday April 10th.
The Dublin Primary Schools Mini-Basketball Board is also pleased to announce a 27% increase in Tournament entries for 2018 bringing the total number of teams to 168.
The Board is managed by Primary Teachers and offers a wide range of programmes aimed at encouraging Primary School children to learn, play and enjoy basketball in a supportive and educational environment. The menu of opportunities range from Just Play where no scores are kept to A and B Tournaments where plaques are awarded to winners and runners-up. All children play the same amount of time and the same amount of games. The 6 period 4v4 system is used where all 12 players play in an on/off rotation.
In keeping with best practice, this avoids the negative aspects of competition for children such as; playing the best only, complex tactics, early elimination structures and trying to win matches at the expenses of player development. Winning schools do not proceed to regional and national events in Primary Schools Mini-Basketball.

Colleagues,
Following the success of the recent Mini-Basketball League and 32 League finals, we thought it timely to outline our plans for the remainder of the school year.  There is no need to book now as we will be circulating entry forms later in the month.
With the exception of the Mini3on3, all Tournaments this year will be played in the 4v4 format.  There are 12 players on each team.  There are six periods and all children must play in two periods.  This ensures better spacing, more passing with more children involved – all leading to better educational outcomes for the children.
Teachers will also be free to bring more than 12 children.  This allows for different combinations of 12.  Learning table officiating is a fundamental part of our approach and schools entering Tournaments must bring children to perform table duties
Our aim is to provide opportunities to learn, play and enjoy basketball in a supportive educational environment, in accordance with the principles of the PE Curriculum.
Mini3on3 Tournaments (before the Easter holidays).
Mini 3on3 (see attached brochure) is one of the best ways for introducing and developing children in Mini-Basketball.  There are 6 players on each team and all children get the opportunity to play, referee and table officiate in rotation.  The concept is particularly suitable for enabling children to understand games in accordance with the PE Curriculum.  We are keen to expand the number of Tournaments and if the forthcoming event is over-subscribed, we will organise more.
Senior A Tournaments for girls and boys (March):
The A Tournaments are for schools which have a higher standard of play and or those with two or more club players, and would like to play against schools of similar standard.  These take place in the National Basketball Arena on March 20th for girls and March 21st for boys.  Depending on available spaces, schools from outside Dublin will be invited, as before.
Senior B Tournaments (late May/June):
These will take place in a number of venues in late May and early June when halls become available.  They cater for schools with no more than one club player.
Just Play Senior Tournaments (late May early June).
These tournaments suit schools who are starting out, or schools which have various teams of different standards.  While referees are appointed, no scores are recorded in Just Play Mini-Basketball and there are no finals.  This is a great way to give children a chance to experience Mini-Basketball as a game to be played freely.
Junior Tournaments
These are aimed at 5th class children.
CPD/Teacher support.
·         A Department recognised summer course with EPV days will take place in the Oblate Hall Inchicore Monday 2nd to Friday 6th July.  The Dublin West Education Centre will be taking bookings at the usual time.
·         We will be in a positon of offer teachers an opportunity to receive special supports with the preparation of their teams for tournaments.  This will depend on the Council area in which the school is situated.  However, all schools will be offered an opportunity.
If your school would like to host a Tournament (two cross courts required to cater for 4v4) and or a  CPD session with a tutor (to which other schools are invited), please forward a separate email to Catriona’s email address below by return mail.
As mentioned above, we will be sending all the schools on our database detailed application forms before the end of January.  Schools will be given the chance to list unsuitable dates, however, once a date and venue is allocated, schools will be expected to be present.  Late changes affect other schools.
So, there are numerous types of Mini-Basketball experience on offer – we hope you will find one or more that suits your school.
